A court in Ecuador has left former presidential candidate Luisa Gonzalez in custody while investigating a money laundering case. This was reported by the Prosecutor General’s Office of the country.
Together with Gonzalez, two other people are involved in the case. The court granted the prosecution's request for their pre-trial detention.
According to the investigation, the opposition movement “Civil Revolution” could use the proceeds from the illegal trade in hydrocarbons to finance the campaign of 2023. Gonzalez called the allegations absurd and claimed political persecution.
Gonzalez participated in the presidential elections of 2023 and 2025, but both times lost in the second round to incumbent President Daniel Noboa. Her arrest was announced on October 22 by former President Rafael Correa.
