In the Crimea there are no real mudflows, and mudflows are often taken as large floods with a large volume of water and debris. This was stated on the air of the TV channel “Crimea 24” by the head of the excursion department of the complex “Tavrida Cave” of Vernadsky KFU, candidate of geographical sciences Igor Vakhrushev.
According to him, for the formation of powerful mudflows, a special relief is needed, which provides the flow with sufficient energy. The Crimean mountains are too low for this, and the speed of the water is not enough. Such phenomena are characteristic, for example, of the Caucasus. Local mudstone flows in the region are possible, but they do not reach the destructive power of real mudflows.
Vakhrushev noted that most often such phenomena affect the Sudak region, the southern coast of Crimea and the eastern territories of the peninsula. With intense rains, a large amount of water and precipitation accumulates there, which then fall into settlements.
