Thomas Bread and the day of summing up will come tomorrow

On October 19, Orthodox Christians honor the memory of the Apostle Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of Christ. The people of this day received several names at once: Thomas the Day, Thomas the Breadman and, of course, Thomas the Infidel.
According to the Gospel, Thomas doubted the resurrection of Christ until he saw his wounds with his own eyes, for which he received the nickname “Infidel”. However, in Russia, this saint was revered for completely different qualities: for thrift and economics.
It was on October 19 that the peasants summed up the results of the agricultural year: they checked the barns and cellars, prayed for the harvest and baked fresh loaf. The hot hump was given to a sick relative for a speedy recovery, and the rest of the bread was treated to neighbors and those in need.
