History of the Flower Calendar of Kislovodsk

In the heart of Kislovodsky National Park, where the air is impregnated with the aroma of needles and light breath of the mountains, there is an object that is rightfully considered the “living clock” of the Caucasian Mineral Waters. We are talking about the famous Flower Calendar - a unique landscape composition, which has become an unconditional symbol of the resort city and a mandatory point in the route of any traveler.

One hundred years of living history

Few people know that this landmark has already celebrated its centenary. For the first time the idea to turn an ordinary slope into a functional art object came to a talented gardener-decorator P. Y. Abolin in the distant 1924. Since then, eras have changed, generations have grown, but the calendar invariably carries its watch on the picturesque scythe. In the upper part of the composition, the name of the city is laid out along an elegant arc, and under it, framed by juicy sod and bright inflorescences, the current day, month and year.

The secret of the longevity and popularity of this place lies in the incredible work of landscapers. Every night, when the park is quiet, the workers of the green farm perform an almost magical ritual: they manually transplant plants so that by dawn the date on the slope becomes relevant again. In the summer season, thousands of units of carpet plants, salvias, coleuses and petunias are used to create patterns, which form a dense, velvety carpet of incredible beauty.

A ritual familiar to everyone

For a tourist, a photo at the calendar is not just a memorable frame, but a kind of initiation ritual. Here you can always find a small but lively queue. People are patiently waiting for their moment to fix forever on the family album: "I was here, on this particular day, in this beautiful place.".

Surprisingly, the calendar does not stop working even with the arrival of cold weather. In winter, when the bright colors of flowers are replaced by muted tones of needles and evergreen shrubs, and the slopes are covered with fluffy snow, the date continues to be updated. At this time of year, the composition looks especially graphic and solemn, reminding that life in the resort does not stop for a second.

More than just a flower bed

Kislovodsk flower calendar is the largest such object in Russia. Located in the Lower Park near the Colonnade, it serves as an ideal reference point for meetings and a starting point for walking around the terrenkurs. It teaches us to appreciate the present moment, because tomorrow the numbers on the slope will change again, inviting us to a new day.

If you find yourself in Kislovodsk, be sure to linger at this flower masterpiece. Take a closer look at the perfect geometry of letters, inhale the aroma of fresh earth and plants and feel how time, usually flowing through your fingers, takes shape, color and unique charm of southern nature.

Earlier it was reported that in Zheleznovodsk the flower calendar preserves time and traditions.
