Final essay 2026: when to write, what topics will be and how to prepare
The final essay 2026-2027 will be held on December 2, the topics graduates will learn on the day of the exam. Bank topics, criteria, clichés and works for arguments.

The final essay 2026-2027 eleventh graders will write on December 2, 2026. This is the only final exam without an assessment: it puts a "credit" or "non-setting", but without a credit, admission to the exam will not. The topics are kept secret until the morning of the exam - only three sections of the closed FIPS bank are known in advance. How to prepare for an essay and get a credit, which works will fit almost any topic - in the material mk.ru.

Who writes the final essay: all students of the 11th grade, as well as foreign citizens, stateless persons, refugees and internally displaced persons, mastering secondary general education programs.
What gives the final essay: successful writing - admission to the exam. In addition, a number of universities accrue additional points (from 1 to 10) as an individual achievement of the applicant.
How much time is given to write: 3 hours 55 minutes (235 minutes). For participants with HIA, the duration is increased by 1.5 hours.
What should be the volume: recommended - from 350 words, the minimum - 250 words. If there are less than 250 words in the essay (including service words), a “non-receipt” is set for the work as a whole.
The requirements and criteria for the final essay in the 2026/27 academic year remained the same and are well known to graduates, told mk.ru tutor in Russian, teacher of the highest category, candidate of pedagogical sciences Lyubov Melnikova. We are talking about the recommended number of words, disclosure of the topic and examples from books.
One important change, according to the expert, is still there: the list of topics has been updated, and many new ones related to history have appeared in it. They are dedicated to key events, processes and outstanding people of Russia. Most often, such topics are found in the section about the Motherland and civic position, as well as in the block at the junction of history and art.
“It is important to remember one fundamental condition: the historical context in the formulation of topics is only an occasion for reflection, not a substitute for a literary argument. Graduates still need to prove their position, relying on works of fiction, — emphasizes the interlocutor mk.ru.
What else has changed in schools this year – read here.
Until 2022, the graduates knew five open thematic areas within which the topics of the final essay were formed. However, such a system made it possible to make blanks and reduced the objectivity of the assessment. Since 2022, open destinations have been canceled - instead of them, a closed bank of FIPI topics is used.
In essence, it is a database containing about 2,000 topics used in past years, as well as new topics developed in 2025 and 2026. The bank is replenished every year.
Many graduates by inertia look for “directions”, although officially this concept no longer exists. Instead, sections and subsections of a closed bank of topics are used. They are published in advance, and graduates will learn specific topics on the day of the exam.
What sections and subsections does a closed topic bank include?
“Spiritual and Moral Guidelines in Human Life”
The first section covers:
According to Lyubov Melnikova, this section contains eternal philosophical questions that literature has explored for centuries.
“The nature of the formulations deserves special attention: antitheses are often used in this block, provoking detailed reasoning. For example, the theme “Do you agree that egoism destroys love?” initially sets a conflict axis, requiring the graduate not only to give examples, but also to show the dialectics of the phenomenon, correlate different points of view and justify their own position.
“Family, Society, Fatherland in Human Life”
The second section includes the following areas:
In 2026, this section acquires special significance: it has undergone a large-scale update due to the inclusion of topics with historical context.
“In preparation, it is important to take into account the shift in emphasis: now often there are formulations focused on understanding the role of a historical figure, a national feat and personal responsibility to the country. A typical example is the topic “Which historical figure would you call truly outstanding?”: it requires not only knowledge of facts, but also the ability to interpret the contribution of a person to history through the prism of moral criteria, supporting judgments with literary examples, explains Lyubov Melnikova.
“Nature and Culture in Human Life”
The third section consists of subsections:
This block, according to the expert, is traditionally perceived by graduates as the most difficult, but with a competent selection of literary material, it can become one of the most profitable. “The advantage of this section is that many works of Russian and world literature organically fit into its problems, allowing you to build convincing arguments even at the junction of topics,” says Lyubov Melnikova.
How specific topics are formed from sections
Each examination kit includes six topics - two from each section of the bank. Topics 1-2 – “Spiritual and Moral Guidelines”, themes 3-4 – “Family, Society, Fatherland”, themes 5-6 – “Nature and Culture”. Subjects are known 15 minutes before the exam. The graduate chooses one of six topics.
The topics can be formulated in three formats:
Examples of past topics for each section
Why topics are not known in advance and how to use them
“The fact that the topics of the final essay are kept in a closed bank can be alarming at first. However, in fact, this bank is public, and in the exam, each eleventh grader will receive a set of six topics - exactly two of each of the three key sections. This format removes the element of total unpredictability and shifts the focus from “guessing” specific formulations to meaningful preparation, says Lyubov Melnikova.
Hence, according to the expert, the main strategic orientation for graduates follows: to prepare not for individual topics, but for cross-cutting problems underlying each section, and to form a universal literary base for them. This approach allows you to flexibly respond to any formulation and confidently build the argument.
To obtain a credit, it is necessary to have a positive result on three criteria, while criteria No. 1 and No. 2 are mandatory:
Additional criteria
Volume and autonomy requirements
Work of less than 250 words is automatically “uncredited.” When identifying borrowings without specifying the source, the assessment is reduced to “non-setting” regardless of other indicators.
How does the result count
The final composition is evaluated by the system of “setting” / “non-setting”. If the work meets the requirements of volume and independence and has a positive result according to criteria 1 and 2, as well as at least one of the others, a "credit" is issued.
Introduction: how to get to the topic and formulate the thesis
The introduction takes 60-70 words (about 15% of the work). You need to define the key concept of the topic and formulate a thesis - the main idea that you will prove.
Main part: argument, example from the work, microconclusion
The main part is 200-250 words. One argument is enough if it is revealed meaningfully. The structure of each argument:
Conclusion: how not to repeat the introduction verbatim
The conclusion is 60-70 words. Summarize, summarize what was said, but do not retell the introduction. Use the wording: "Thus, we can draw a conclusion ...", "Generally speaking, I want to say that ...".
Speech constructions for entry
Constructs for transition to argument

When clichés hurt: typical mistakes
Do not use phrases such as “This topic is very relevant in our time” – they fit any topic and do not report anything. Clichés should help, not replace your thought.
According to Lyubov Melnikova, the result depends not so much on literacy, but on whether the graduate can logically reason and correctly understand the topic. It is here that mistakes are most often made that lead to “non-setting”.
Mistake 1. Quitting the subject
The most common and most expensive mistake. The graduate sees a familiar word in the topic (“love”, “war”, “historical personality”), writes according to a prepared template and does not answer the question itself.
For example, in the topic “Does every historical person deserve respect?” there is little to say about Peter I. It is necessary to answer the question “is there anything?”: for what a person can be respected, are there exceptions, how to evaluate his actions.
Mistake 2. Retelling instead of argument
The argument should prove the thesis, not just mention the work. A retelling of the plot (“the hero went there, said this, then something happened”) is not considered an argument.
To meet the criterion, it is necessary to include in the essay microconclusions - short explanations that reveal the relationship of the example with the thesis. It is not enough to tell about the action of the character: you need to show how this action confirms the stated thought, the teacher says.
Mistake 3. Few words
If there are less than 250 words in the essay, “non-recording” is automatically put. Work on the edge, such as 255 words, runs the risk of not passing the threshold when counting. It is better to write from 350 words.
Mistake 4. The argument does not support the thesis
It happens that the example from the work does not confirm the idea from the introduction or even contradicts it. To avoid this, check at the plan stage whether each argument proves your thesis.
Universal works for several sections
Some books fit several sections of the bank of topics at once. They should be read first.
“War and Peace” by L. N. Tolstoy will approach the themes of spiritual and moral guidelines and the section “Family, Society, Fatherland”: in the novel there is a search for the meaning of life, and family stories, and the war of 1812.
“Crime and Punishment” by F. M. Dostoevsky is a support for topics about moral choice, freedom and responsibility. The story of Raskolnikov shows what the theory turns out to be, which allows you to step over a person.
“The Captain’s Daughter” by A. S. Pushkin will be useful in topics about family, Fatherland and civic position. On the example of Peter Grinev, it is convenient to talk about duty, loyalty to the oath and honor.
“The Fate of Man” by M.A.Sholokhov will approach the section “Family, Society, Fatherland” and the topics of honor and dignity. Andrei Sokolov went through war and captivity, lost his family, but retained his humanity.

Section "Nature and Culture"
Lyubov Melnikov explains that eleventh graders have much more freedom in choosing literary arguments than is often believed. The normative base of the exam is focused on demonstrating the reader’s independence and breadth of cultural outlook.
The expert explained what sources can be relied on in the argument:
“Reliance solely on subjective examples is not permitted: at least one argument must be supported by literary material. Personal experience can only be used as an additional argument, but not as the main evidence, explains Lyubov Melnikova.
Where to start and how many works you really need
Start by exploring the sections and subsections of a closed topic bank. It is enough to work out 5-7 universal works that fit into several sections. Learn their problems, heroes and key episodes.
Reading diary and argument cards
Keep a reader’s diary or table divided by topics bank sections. For each work, fix the author, title, problem, key episode, possible topics. This will allow you to quickly select arguments in the exam.
Training and self-testing according to criteria
Write 2-3 training essays on different topics, taking the time (235 minutes). Check yourself by the criteria: compliance with the topic, argumentation, composition, quality of speech, literacy.
Preparation plan for 5 weeks
The optimal period of preparation for the final essay from scratch is 4-6 weeks, the teacher says. The exam will take place on December 2, 2026, so it is better to start intensive training in the second half of October or in the first days of November.
For the start, it is convenient to use the autumn holidays. When they begin and how long they will last, read here.
The preparation can be divided into five thematic weeks.
Week 1: Requirements and Composition
First you need to understand the rules of the exam and the logic of text construction. Study the FIIP requirements and evaluation criteria, especially criteria No. 1 and No. 2 for gross violations on them put “non-setting”. Then analyze the classical composition of the essay: the thesis in the introduction, two arguments (one necessarily literary, the second is literary or additional) and the conclusion in the conclusion. In parallel, master speech clichés that help connect parts of the text with each other.
Week 2: "Spiritual and moral guidelines in human life"
The task is to collect arguments for philosophical topics: about good and evil, conscience, selfishness, etc. Small, but deep works are best suited: stories by I. Bunin (“Caucasus”), A. Chekhov (“Ionich”, “Rothschild’s Violin”), L. Andreev (“Kusaka”), V. Astafiev (“A Horse with a Pink Mane”) and others. On their basis, it is useful to write the first trial essay on the topic from this section and strictly monitor the volume.
Week 3: "Family, Society, Fatherland in Human Life"
In this section, the main works for argumentation are “The Captain’s Daughter” by A. S. Pushkin, “Vasily Terkin” by A. Tvardovsky and “The Fate of Man” by M. Sholokhov. They help to reveal themes of duty and honor, historical memory, family values and moral choices in extreme conditions. To fix the material is the second test essay.
Week 4: Nature and Culture in Human Life
It focuses on the relationship between man and nature, the impact of scientific and technological progress, the role of art and the value of language. M. Bulgakov’s story “Heart of a Dog” (especially for topics about science and the responsibility of a scientist) and R. Bradbury’s stories “Smile” and “Weld” are well suited for analysis – about the conflict of technology and humanistic values. In practice, it is important to work out microconclusions: in 2-3 sentences clearly show how the episode or act of the hero confirms the thesis.
Week 5: Training in conditions close to the exam
At the last stage, all actions must be brought to automatism. The main practice is a trial exam in real time: the text is written by hand in 3 hours 55 minutes, you can use only a spelling dictionary, as in the classroom. After that, be sure to check yourself: count the words, assess how logically connected the text is, remove speech repetitions and stylistic inaccuracies.
If you have received a “non-receipt”, do not panic.
“Non-setting shall not entail automatic non-admission to the exam. In accordance with the current procedure for conducting the state final certification, the student has the right to try again: the work can be rewritten twice in special reserve days. For the 2026/27 academic year, the following reserve dates are set: February 3 and April 14, 2027, says Lyubov Melnikova.
You can prepare for the retake during the winter holidays. When students rest in the 2026-2027 academic year – read here.
According to the expert, the statistical data of Rosobrnadzor and FIIP indicate a fairly high success rate of work: about 98% of eleventh graders receive a “credit” on the first attempt. The remaining 2% successfully cross the threshold when re-submitting.
Some universities charge up to 10 additional points for the final essay as an individual achievement. But this is not a mandatory rule: each university decides on its own.
In school for the composition put only “credit” or “non-credit”. The university, according to Lyubov Melnikova, has the right to request work from the federal base, check it according to its criteria and accrue points.
Those who enter the budget, especially on popular destinations, even 1-2 additional points can help pass the competition. Therefore, the composition should be taken seriously, even if the average work would be enough to qualify.
