How not to be poisoned by false mushrooms: a reminder for mushroom pickers
Mushroom season-2026 in Belarus: how to distinguish autumn pits and hogs from dangerous twins? Safety checklist, symptoms of poisoning and first aid.

Mushroom season-2026 in Belarus was extremely generous: a series of warm rains and a mild beginning of October brought thousands of lovers of “quiet hunting” into the forests. However, along with full baskets of hogs and foxes, alarming reports of poisonings returned to the news feeds.
The main danger of mid-autumn is false mushrooms, which are skillfully disguised as edible delicacies. We tell you how to distinguish doppelgangers and what to put in the "first aid kit mushroom" so that the weekend does not end in a hospital bed.
Top 3 dangerous twins of October: check the signs
In October, in the forests of Belarus (especially in the Naliboka Forest, the forests of Logoyshchyna and the Vitebsk region) autumn opsats, oils and late boroviki are in full swing. They are often confused with toxic analogues.
1. Autumn turf vs False foam (sulfur yellow and brick red)
- 1.It's a real foam. Has a skirt (ring) on the leg, the hat is covered with small dark scales, the color is calm - fawn, brownish or honey. It smells good.
- 2.False foam: There is no ring on the leg, the hat is smooth and bright (screamy yellow or poisonous red). The plates under the hat quickly darken, acquiring a greenish or gray-black hue. The smell is unpleasant, earthy.
2. White mushroom (borovik) vs Gall mushroom (gorchak)
- 1.True white: The net on the leg is light (white or pale). The bottom of the hat (sponge) is white in a young mushroom, the old one is yellowish-green. The flesh on the cut never turns pink and remains snow-white.
- 2.Gall mushroom: The flesh on the cut or fracture turns pink within 1-2 minutes. The mesh on the leg is dark, pronounced (resembling blood vessels), and the tubular layer under the hat has a dirty pink hue. Gorchak is not poisonous deadly, but one such mushroom will spoil the whole pan of soup with bitterness.
3. Green (green raw) vs Pale grebe
- 1.Green and raw. They grow in pine forests, often in the sand. The leg is flat, dense, at the base there are no films and bags.
- 2.Pale toadstool (the most dangerous mushroom of Belarus!): In October, she is mistaken for a green leaf because of her olive-green hat. The toadstool is given by a “volva” – a characteristic bag at the very base of the leg, from which the mushroom grows (often hidden in moss or earth), as well as a skirt ring on the leg.
Golden safety rules: checklist for Belarusians
To "quiet hunting" brought only pleasure, it is recommended to follow a strict rule: "Not sure - do not take.".
- 1.No tasting. Never taste raw mushrooms to determine their edibility (particularly the myth of “sweet” false fumes).
- 2.Forget about folk myths. An onion or silver spoon darkened in a decoction does not define poisons. They respond to enzymes and amino acids found in both edible and poisonous mushrooms. Any insects and worms also calmly eat a pale toadstool - their body is arranged differently.
- 3.Rule 4 hours. Collected mushrooms are a perishable product. They need to be sorted, cleaned and boiled (or processed) within the first 4-5 hours after returning from the forest.
- 4.The city is taboo. Do not collect mushrooms in cities, along highways and busy highways, as well as near industrial areas. Mushrooms like a sponge absorb heavy metals, turning even a noble hog into a toxic bomb.
The first symptoms of poisoning: what to do?
The insidiousness of autumn toxins (especially pale toadstool amatoxins) is that the first symptoms can appear 6-24 hours after dinner, when the poison has already been absorbed into the blood and began to destroy the liver.
Red flags:
- 1.Sudden nausea, indomitable vomiting;
- 2.Acute, cramping pain in the stomach;
- 3.Severe diarrhea (sometimes with blood);
- 4.Weakness, dizziness, cold sweat.
First aid before the ambulance arrives:
- 1.Call an ambulance (call 103).
- 2.Wash your stomach: Drink 4-5 glasses of warm clean water and induce vomiting (repeat 2-3 times).
- 3.Take sorbents (activated charcoal or modern gels/powders).
- 4.Drink plenty of water without gas to avoid dehydration.
- 5.Important: Keep the residues of mushrooms or clear them – this will help doctors in the laboratory quickly determine the type of toxin and administer the correct antidote.
Take care of yourself, check each mushroom in the face and let your baskets be filled with only useful trophies!
