In Russia, Yakov officially opened the season of firewood for the winter. It was believed that by this time the sap movement in the trees completely stops, the wood becomes dry and gives the hottest fire in the furnace: “Autumn log burns hot, summer is not matched.”.
The second popular name of the day is the Day of the First Porridge. The hostess grilled the grain of a new crop, cooked hearty porridge (milty, oatmeal or barley) with ghee or lard and baked pies with porridge. To treat such a dish to neighbors and households was considered the key to prosperity for the whole winter.
