Experts of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia have compiled a list of the most mysterious locations of the country, shrouded in a halo of secrets and legends.

Wet coniferous thickets, haze creeping over the water surface, emerald moss-covered boulders and ringing silence - such an aesthetic is familiar to fans of the Twilight saga. However, such landscapes do not necessarily go to the American Forks. On the expanses of our country are hidden locations where nature itself creates scenery worthy of a mystical thriller: from bizarrely curved trees to mountain peaks covered with ancient legends.

Karelia deservedly topped this rating. In autumn, the region is transformed, acquiring a special northern melancholy. Dark needles, black surface of lakes and granite rocks hiding in low clouds create a unique atmosphere.

According to specialists of the tour operator “Nevsky Seasons”, in the autumn period Ruskeala looks especially spectacular: the combination of emerald water of the canyon, gray rocks and thick fog resembles a film set. Complement this entourage waterfalls Ahvenkoski, the harsh shores of the Ladoga skerries and the ancient walls of the fortress of Korela.

For those who are looking for not just picturesque views, but places with a touch of mysticism, Mount Vottovaara will be a mandatory point. This plateau with a height of 417 meters is famous for its anomalies. Here you can find hundreds of huge boulders installed on the "legs"-stands, which gave rise to a lot of theories about their man-made origin.

The top of the mountain looks surreal: after a forest fire in 2006, there are only twisted, lifeless pines, among which small lakes hide. Of particular interest is the so-called “staircase to the sky” – the steps carved in stone, the purpose of which is still a mystery.

Travelers often share stories of strange gadget failures and oppressive silence reigning on the plateau. Although there is no scientific confirmation of the anomalies, the mountain has become a cult place for lovers of esotericism.
