“Charitins – the first canvases”: traditions and signs of the holiday

People on October 18 called the Haritin – the first canvases. By mid-October, the field work was completed, the harvest was harvested, and it was time for long autumn evenings, which the peasants devoted to household chores and needlework.

Women sat at spinning wheels and looms, began to weave canvases, and men took up the manufacture of boots and weaving paws. In the course there were proverbs: “Kharitina weaved and spinned – she dressed the whole house”, “Kharitin – the first canvases”.

A special role was played by the first strand that day - it was considered a talisman from troubles and diseases. The thread was not thrown away, but wrapped around the wrist to protect against the evil eye and dark forces.
