Cynologists explained why dogs tend to sleep under the covers

Many dog owners notice that their pets try to climb under a blanket or blanket at any opportunity. This habit is familiar to dog breeders regardless of the breed and size of the animal. Experts identify five main reasons for this behavior.

Pack instinct. Domestic dogs are social animals for which the family replaces the pack. Sleeping next to your master under a blanket is not a fad, but a deeply rooted instinct. Being close to people, the pet feels like part of the group. In addition, dogs often adopt the habits of owners: seeing a person covered with a blanket, the animal tends to repeat the action.

A sense of security. The ancestors of modern dogs sought shelter for sleep to protect themselves from predators and bad weather. This instinct is preserved: the blanket creates the illusion of shelter, where the dog feels safe.

Temperature comfort. Despite the wool cover, dogs are sensitive to the cold. In the cold season, the blanket helps to keep warm. Behavior changes by seasons: in summer, animals can only partially cover themselves with a blanket, and with the onset of cold weather, the desire to hide increases, especially in short-haired breeds.

Breed characteristics. Terriers, dachshunds, and other burrow dogs are genetically predisposed to “digging up” and finding shelter. For them, the arrangement of a sleeping place under a blanket is a ritual that resembles the creation of a burrow. Hunting breeds create cozy nests, and shepherds use a blanket to control the space.

Psychological comfort. The shelter under the blanket creates a relaxation zone. This is especially important for anxious pets or animals that have experienced stress. Dark cozy space reduces anxiety and helps to cope with external stimuli.
