Kostroma pensioner cheated on 942 thousand rubles according to the classic scheme of replacement meters

A classic scheme of deception using social engineering methods brought 942,000 rubles stolen from a 74-year-old resident of Kostroma. The incident occurred in early October and developed in three stages.

First, the utilities, under the guise of recording replacement meters, received a confirmation code from the victim from SMS, which gave them access to account management or personal accounts. Then the case entered the “law enforcement officers”, who created a state of panic in the pensioner. They said that the fraudsters have already issued a general power of attorney for the woman’s property.

The culmination was the transfer of funds: under the pretext of urgent verification of the “legality” of savings, the victim was forced to withdraw cash and transfer them to an account controlled by scammers for five days. The police of the Kostroma region is already investigating, but it was not possible to return the transferred money hotly.
