Kupriyan and Ustinya: Church holiday October 15, 2026, signs, traditions and prohibitions
On October 15, 2026, Orthodox believers celebrate a church holiday – the day of memory of the Hieromartyr Cyprian, the Martyr Justina and the Martyr Theoctistus

History of the church holiday
The Hieromartyr Cyprian lived in Antioch in the third century. Since childhood, his parents gave him to serve the pagan gods. He studied sorcery in the largest centers of paganism - on Mount Olympus, in Argos, Memphis and Babylon. By the age of thirty, Cyprian had become the chief priest, who was credited with the ability to control the elements, send pestilence and summon the dead.
The fate of Cyprian changed when he tried to bewitch a pagan girl named Justina. She professed Christianity and prayed so sincerely that all the charms of Cyprian broke down. Struck by the power of her faith, he himself was baptized and later became a bishop. Justina became a monk. Both of them suffered for their faith in 304 under the emperor Diocletian – they were executed after cruel tortures.
Traditions in Kupriyan and Ustinha
This day was considered a time of purification from obsessions and evil spells. People believed that on October 15, the evil forces were especially active, so they tried to protect themselves and loved ones.
The main tradition of the day is prayer to Saints Cyprian and Justina. It was believed that they help to get rid of bad influence, protect against witchcraft, envy and evil intentions. People prayed to get rid of obsessions, to protect the family and home.
On this day it was customary to wash with holy water and sprinkle it on the dwelling. This was done to protect against evil spirits and evil eyes.
The hostess baked cakes and pancakes, treated relatives and neighbors. It was believed that the more generous the table, the more luck in the house.
Also on October 15, it was forbidden to work with sharp objects - knives, scissors, needles. They believed that they could “cut” their happiness or cause trouble.
