Lesha is going underground, and winter is coming. What you need to know about Erofeev Day

By Erofeev day they tried to insulate the dwellings, check the stocks of firewood, put the pantry in order and get warm clothes. It was believed that the house should be ready for the first frost.

According to popular beliefs, to protect the home from evil spirits helped bundles of onions and garlic at doors and windows. And in order for peace and prosperity to reign in the family, the house was left with a treat - for example, a piece of cake.

Also in the old days, an herbal tincture “Erofeich” was prepared with mint, St. John’s wort, oregano and other fragrant herbs. It was considered warming.

According to natural phenomena, they tried to determine whether cold will come soon and what winter will be like. Here are the most famous signs of Erofeev’s day:

The main prohibition was to go to the forest, especially alone. People believed that a lazy person before hibernation becomes especially restless and can knock a traveler off the road. In our time in autumn, it is really worth taking care: it gets dark early, and the weather changes quickly.

It was also not recommended to quarrel, gossip and swear, so as not to cause family troubles. According to legends, on this day should not get married, confess love and play weddings – the relationship could be fragile.

Some traditions forbid washing clothes, washing your hair and eating with a knife. These limitations are based on superstition and have no scientific evidence.

Erofeev day reminds of the ancient customs of meeting the cold. The practical meaning of traditions remains clear today: to prepare the house for winter, take care of loved ones and be more attentive to nature.
