In the UK, two men were re-arrested who are suspected of preparing a terrorist attack at the Royal Air Force Base Fairford, where American strategic bombers were stationed. Counterterrorism police are investigating possible Iranian intelligence involvement.
The suspects were detained on charges of alleged assistance to foreign intelligence. The two men are a 24-year-old British citizen and a 25-year-old man with British and Iranian citizenship.
The head of the Counter-Terrorism Police, Lawrence Taylor, said that the investigation is ongoing and law enforcement agencies consider the involvement of the Iranian state very likely.
The five men were initially detained on September 27. They were moving in vans in the direction of Fairford air base, where there were American B-1 bombers involved in strikes on Iran. In total, at least seven suspects were detained as part of the investigation, but they were subsequently released.
When examining the vans, investigators found no weapons or explosives. Among the items found were canisters of gasoline.
Despite the lack of such findings, the US decided to withdraw its aircraft from the UK. The U.S. side said that Iran may be preparing a major attack on Fairford or other facilities.
However, according to British media, law enforcement agencies have not yet provided concrete evidence that the air base or bombers there were indeed threatened.
