Million risks for six months: in Russia called the main factors of obesity and chronic diseases
In Russia, according to insurance medical organizations, only in the first six months of 2026 during medical examination revealed about 1 million cases of risk of obesity

In addition to the risk of obesity, among the most common factors, experts noted hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar levels) - 147,000 cases, tobacco smoking - 139,000, excess body weight - 124,000, low physical activity - 62 thousand and high blood pressure without an established diagnosis of hypertension - 59 thousand cases.
According to the bariatric surgeon of GBUZ “City Hospital of St. George” Eva Medvenskaya, such a number of identified risk factors suggests that the problem of overweight and obesity remains significant for the health of the population.
“It is particularly important that among the factors identified we see not only excess body weight, but also hyperglycemia, high blood pressure and low physical activity.” These conditions are often interrelated and may collectively increase long-term health risks. Therefore, the doctor’s task is not just to fix a separate indicator, but to assess the overall picture and understand what changes are already occurring in the patient’s body. Obesity is a chronic recurrent disease, and the earlier a person receives the necessary medical care, the more opportunities to control its course and reduce the risk of complications, notes Eva Medvenskaya.
The absence of severe symptoms does not mean that the problem does not require attention. Obesity can develop gradually for a long time, and the related disorders become noticeable at later stages. Early diagnosis in this case allows you to timely determine the degree of the disease, assess the risks and choose the appropriate treatment tactics.
“The treatment of obesity should always take into account the individual situation of the patient. Depending on the degree of the disease and the presence of concomitant conditions, different approaches are used - from lifestyle correction and drug therapy to surgical treatment. In severe forms of obesity and the presence of indications, one of the most effective methods can be bariatric surgery: it allows not only to achieve significant weight loss, but also to improve the course of diseases associated with obesity, says the doctor.
Today, the professional community is working to revise and update clinical recommendations on obesity (the draft document is undergoing a public discussion procedure). “The key and agreed innovations that are highly likely to be included in the final version of the CR are the expansion of the spectrum of pharmacotherapy for obesity by including the drug tirzepatide (according to indications), as well as the addition of the list of recommended bariatric interventions. All other aspects, including individual diagnostic and therapeutic approaches mentioned in the project are in the stage of active development, the press service of the Endocrinological Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences told MK.
Experts reminded that today obesity is considered as a chronic recurrent disease that requires a long-term, comprehensive and personalized approach to its treatment, diagnosis, prevention, as well as rehabilitation after possible surgical interventions.
