About what achievements of modern Belarus are appreciated by its residents and why the results of the republican sociological research are important for the management of the country, Vadim Gigin, a deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly, general director of the National Library of Belarus, told sb.by. The results of a large-scale comprehensive republican sociological study conducted by the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Studies showed what achievements of modern Belarus citizens are proud of. More than 85% of respondents are proud of peaceful life, 62.5% - the quality of food, almost 58% - cleanliness and improvement of settlements, almost 38% - the preservation of historical memory, 36% - social security of the population.
Belarusians, both officials and ordinary people, are sincerely proud of these achievements. Foreigners also pay attention to them.
Vadim Gigin explained the importance of systematic monitoring of public opinion:
- This data is completely objective. Both opponents and Western experts have to admit them, they refer to the data of our sociological surveys. Such monitoring is necessary so that managers understand where to direct funds in the first place. I talked to a senior executive, he said: we already know the problems of society – prices, water quality, roads, housing and communal services. But what problem in this or that area comes to the fore, where it is necessary to concentrate forces, where to direct funds first of all? So this is what sociology helps to solve.
- This is a result achieved in the course of some work. This does not mean that we should complace, stop and rest on our laurels – these areas should be further developed.
We live in a safe country with clean streets:
- We must remember and understand that it did not fall from the sky. This is our national character, which is formed by a system of consistent actions of the authorities and society. We have been living in a peaceful country for more than 80 years, of which more than 30 years have been in sovereign Belarus. This is the greatest achievement of our country. This is something that unites absolutely all people of different political views. This is the strength of our political model.
