In the Vologda region, specialists of the Vologdaleskhoz breeding center prepare spruce and pine seedlings with a closed root system for wintering. Plants undergo hardening to become more resistant to cold and lack of moisture.
To slow down the growth of seedlings reduce, and then stop nitrogen feeding, increasing the proportion of potash. In August and September, watering and ventilation of greenhouses are reduced, so that plants get used to a decrease in temperature.
Then the seedlings are transferred to the hardening sites, where they will stay until spring. At the sites, cassettes are placed close to each other and as close to the ground as possible.
Seedlings with a closed root system are easier to tolerate transplantation and quickly adapt to a new place. The cultivation of planting material remains an important part of the reproduction of forests and the implementation of the tasks of the national project “Environmental Well-being”.
