Find autumn slug shelters and protect future shoots
With the first cold, slugs do not necessarily die

With the first cold, slugs do not necessarily die. In different species, eggs, young or adult individuals experience winter. Where in the summer there were holes in the leaves and mucous traces, in the fall it is worth checking the wet shelters near the beds.
Under unnecessary boards, pots, among thick weeds and wet plant residues can be slugs and heaps of translucent eggs. Also look at the top layer of soil. Pick up pests manually, remove unnecessary shelters and rotting remains. If the eggs were not found, it does not mean that there are no slugs.
On beds with growing crops, avoid constant dampness and thickening; watering is better if necessary in the morning. If the damage continues, put a wet board in the evening, and in the morning collect the slugs hidden under it. After the rain, the collection is repeated. In case of severe harm, only baits from slugs, registered for personal subsidiary farms, are allowed, strictly according to the instructions.
All winter mulch is not necessary to remove: it protects the roots and useful inhabitants of the soil. Excessive wet shelters are selectively removed where there were damages. In the spring, the beds are checked again before tender shoots appear. Autumn cleaning reduces the risk, but does not guarantee the disappearance of slugs.
The period of relevance for the Kostroma region: September - mid-November (autumn cleaning and inspection of beds before freezing soil).
