Two children and a mortgage did not help: a native of Uzbekistan lost her Russian citizenship after a criminal case

The Annunciation City Court did not restore Russian citizenship to a native of Uzbekistan convicted of organizing illegal migration. This was reported in the press service of the court.

The woman tried to challenge the decision of the Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, citing long life in Russia, the presence of a job, a mortgage and two children. However, the court recognized the actions of the department as lawful and left her claim without satisfaction.

The woman lived in Russia for more than 14 years and in August 2022 received a Russian passport under a simplified procedure. But in June 2025, she was found guilty of organizing illegal migration and fictitious registration of a foreigner. The court ordered the woman a fine of 100 thousand rubles, which she paid in full. Despite this, in January 2026, the Ministry of Internal Affairs terminated her citizenship, and the passport issued earlier was canceled.

Not agreeing with this decision, the woman went to court. Her lawyer insisted that the relevant article of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation was included in the list of grounds for termination of citizenship after committing a crime. The plaintiff stressed that she has long settled in the country, is officially employed, pays taxes, raises two children and pays a mortgage for an apartment. However, representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said that these circumstances do not negate the consequences of the conviction that entered into force.

The court supported the position of the Ministry, explaining that it is not about arbitrary deprivation of citizenship, and the termination of previously acquired status on the grounds provided for by law. According to Article 24 of the Federal Law “On Citizenship of the Russian Federation”, the commission of certain crimes may entail such consequences regardless of the date of the crime and the receipt of a passport. As a result, the woman was left without Russian citizenship, but she retains the right to appeal the decision in the Amur Regional Court.
