No cure, there is protection: what's important to know about polio on World Disease Day

World Polio Day. Medicine is successfully fighting this virus, scientists are developing new vaccines.

The disease affects the spinal cord and causes paralysis. In case of infection, there is no treatment. You can only protect yourself with a vaccine. Vaccination reduced the incidence by 99% and prevented an estimated 20 million cases of paralysis in children.

In Belarus, the polio vaccine is mandatory. It's been going on for over 60 years. The virus has not been recorded since 1964. But in other countries – in Pakistan, Afghanistan, as well as on the African continent – there are cases. This day is meant to remind each of us of a responsible attitude towards ourselves.
