Novosibirsk surgeons removed a giant tumor from the abdominal cavity
In Novosibirsk, doctors of the RZD-Medicine Clinical Hospital removed a giant lipoma weighing 8.7 kg to a 39-year-old man

The man entered the gastroenterological department with complaints of heartburn, discomfort and pulling pain under his right rib. Unpleasant feelings bothered him for more than a year. Despite the growing neoplasm, the patient's weight remained stable, appetite did not deteriorate, and blood tests did not reveal abnormalities.
The tumor was detected during an ultrasound examination. The survey showed that a large formation almost filled the abdominal cavity, because of which the internal organs were displaced to the side.
As told RT Candidate of Medical Sciences, Deputy Chief Physician for Surgical Care Alexey Andreev, the case was difficult even for experienced specialists. Although lipomas are usually benign, when they reach this size, they pose a serious surgical problem.
Over the years of growth, the tumor overgrown numerous blood vessels and tightly connects with the surrounding tissues. Therefore, surgeons need not only to separate it from healthy organs, but also to avoid damage to the vessels, which could lead to severe bleeding.
Before the operation, doctors conducted a trepane biopsy to determine the nature of the neoplasm. The study confirmed that the tumor was benign. After removal, it turned out that its mass is 8.7 kg.
“The patient lived with an education that occupied most of the abdominal cavity, and the body compensated until the last. We are used to operating tumors in a few hundred grams, here the count was on kilograms — it required jewelry work of the whole team, — said the candidate of medical Sciences, head of the surgical Department No 1 Pavel Platonov.
After surgery, the discomfort that bothered the man for more than a year disappeared. The patient is now recovering at home.
According to doctors, further growth of the neoplasm could lead to impaired kidney function and damage to organs displaced by the tumor.
Doctors remind that the absence of severe symptoms and normal test results do not always mean that there are no health problems. Timely examinations help to identify dangerous changes before serious complications occur.
Earlier, "MK in Novosibirsk" reported that the hospital will pay the patient 20 thousand rubles for the lack of drugs.
