“They can’t even wash properly.” The American came to Russia to teach Russian life. But after a trip to Tsarskoe Selo, she had nothing to say
The American guest came to St. Petersburg with prejudices about life in Russia. Cool October weather reinforced her in the idea that the locals are freezing because of poverty and are forced to save even on heating.

The owner did not argue with the foreigner, but offered her to drive around the city and see how people live. During the walk, the woman again talked about the cold and suggested that Russians can not afford the usual comfort, writes Zen channel “Talk about education”.
The man explained that the heating season does not begin immediately with the onset of autumn, but depending on weather conditions and local decisions. The cold weather itself does not say anything about the standard of living.
Later they went to the cafe, where the guest was able to warm up, and the conversation gradually turned to the history and everyday life of St. Petersburg.
However, the American was most impressed by the trip to Tsarskoye Selo. Seeing the Catherine Palace with its state halls, gilding and luxurious interiors, she could not hide her surprise. A walk through the parks with well-groomed alleys and fountains finally changed the impression of the trip.
Instead of the expected picture of poverty, it was a city with a rich cultural heritage, beautiful architecture and developed urban life.
The host did not try to convince the guest with loud statements. He simply showed her St. Petersburg, giving her the opportunity to draw her own conclusions.
By the end of the day, the American did not return to the previous charges. Her attention turned to the sights and impressions of the walk.
This story reminds us that ideas about another country are often made up of stereotypes. But real life is much more complicated than any other people’s stories, and sometimes it is enough to see everything with your own eyes to change your mind.
