In the Vologda regional clinical hospital for the first time performed a complex neurosurgical operation - the creation of extra-intracranial microanastomosis. The intervention required a 61-year-old man. He suffered several strokes: both of his carotid arteries were completely blocked, and there were not enough spare blood routes to the brain.
The decision was made by an interdisciplinary consultation with the participation of neurologists, neurosurgeons and vascular surgeons. The operation was performed by neurosurgeon Nikita Mikhailov. As a workaround for the blood, he used the patient's own tissues, connecting the vessel outside to an artery feeding the brain.
On the seventh day, the man was discharged home. Control ultrasound confirmed that the new anastomosis was working and blood flow was restored. Six months later, doctors note that the patient lives a full life, repeated treatments with vascular complications were not.
