Orel scientist received a grant to develop an innovative system for surgeons
Senior Researcher of the Scientific and Technological Center for Biomedical Photonics of OSU

Senior Researcher of the Scientific and Technological Center for Biomedical Photonics of I.S. Turgenev OSU Elena Potapova became the winner of the competition of the Russian Science Foundation. Her project is among 853 initiatives across the country that will receive financial support. This was reported by the press service of the regional government.
The grant is aimed at creating a special system for laparoscopic operations. It will help surgeons during the intervention to assess the blood supply to tissues. Now this assessment is largely subjective, and the market is experiencing a shortage of compact devices compatible with standard medical equipment.
Orel researchers intend to develop a complex that can be connected directly to conventional laparoscopes and operating racks. The technology will be based on the method of laser speckle-contrast visualization. It allows, without the introduction of chemical contrasts, to obtain a detailed map of blood flow by the degree of blurring of laser light by moving red blood cells. At the same time, the created device will effectively compensate for image displacements inevitable during operations.
