First Deputy Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee Alexander Komendant met with the staff of Belelectromontazhnaladka in a single day of informing. The central topic of the conversation was the Day of National Unity as a factor of national pride, the correspondent of the Minsk-Novosti news agency reports.
- National Unity Day is not just a date in the calendar, it is a history lesson that has become the foundation for our statehood. For Belarusians, it is of particular importance, since it allows you to preserve national identity, said A. Commandant.
The First Deputy Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee reminded the audience about the historical prerequisites for this event: the signing of the Riga Peace Treaty of 1921, the life of Belarusians in Ushodnykh Krasy, the policy of Polonization and the elimination of national identity in Western Belarus.
Ethnocide manifested itself through the ban on the Belarusian language, the Orthodox faith, the manifestation of national characteristics. Belarusians were not allowed to hold public office, the army, the police — in fact, were declared second-class citizens. The division was also in economic terms: these lands turned into a backward agrarian and raw materials region of Poland, the speaker said.

Belarusian culture and education were put in a constant struggle for survival for 18 years: newspapers and magazines, libraries and clubs were liquidated, Belarusian cultural figures, writers and poets were persecuted. In addition, the Polish government pursued a policy of polonization of the Orthodox Church.
- Despite all the efforts of the Polish authorities, the Belarusian people managed to preserve ethno-cultural unity, and in our history and public consciousness there was no artificial division into “Westerners” and “Easterners”, – said A. Commandant.
Recalling significant pages of the national history, the First Deputy Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee moved on to the achievements of modern sovereign Belarus. Today, the country is among the world’s largest exporters of meat and dairy products, and industrial giants BelAZ, MTZ, MAZ and Gomselmash can be called a national treasure. In addition, we are part of the nuclear elite of the world: thanks to the Belarusian NPP, we have been able to significantly strengthen our energy security and independence.
During the meeting, employees of the enterprise could ask questions to the First Deputy Chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee.

For example, the feasibility of introducing paid parking. The questioner outlined the problem: drivers who do not want to pay occupy places in the yards of residential buildings.
- The experiment with paid parking in general proved to be effective. Yes, some motorists are now abandoning cars in yards, and tenants will have to call the traffic police and remove them with tow trucks. But a culture of driving can’t happen all at once – at least six months, a year must pass. And if this culture does not exist, it must be planted: the entire civilized world follows this path, the Commandant emphasized.
The meeting participants also discussed the development of the metro, construction of parking lots, tram service, provision of rental housing, education in Belarusian schools and much more. The conversation took place in an open and friendly atmosphere, and the audience received comprehensive answers to most questions.
