President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a law that changes the national alphabet on the basis of the Latin alphabet. This was reported in the Telegram channel by Saida Mirziyoyeva, who heads the presidential administration. She said a long-standing historical mistake had finally been corrected.
The reform will affect the writing of four letters. The designations O', G', Sh and Ch will be replaced by Ö, о, Ş and Ç. In addition, the combination Ng will no longer be considered a separate letter. The new alphabet will have 28 letters and one apostrophe instead of 26 letters and 3 combinations.
According to Mirziyoyeva, the main task of the reform is to remove the inconvenience of writing and simplify the use of the Uzbek language in the digital environment. The transition to the new rules will be gradual. Residents of the country will not have to change documents, money and securities, said the representative of the presidential administration.
On October 21, 2025, when the Uzbek language celebrated the 36th anniversary of obtaining state status, the authorities of Uzbekistan completely abandoned the Cyrillic alphabet. The official accounts of Shavkat Mirziyoyev and his press secretary Sherzod Asadov in social networks switched to the Latin script.
