On Wednesday, October 21, on the territory of the Penza Regional Clinical Hospital named after N.N. Burdenko, a celebration was held on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the only memorial House-Museum of Nikolai Nilovych Burdenko in Russia. Doctors, medical historians and students gathered at the event to pay tribute to the founder of Russian neurosurgery.
The history of this museum has a unique path. In 1976, on the initiative of the secretary of the regional party committee G.V. Myasnikov, a small wooden house of the Burdenko family was carefully transported from Peski Island to the territory of the regional hospital. It was from this moment that his museum life began.
Half a century later, the building still retains its historical appearance. The head of the museum Olga Babkina noted that 90% of the exhibits are memorial, that is, belonged to Nikolai Nilovic and his family. According to her, there are really unique items that are almost nowhere to find. For example, old tools and scales.
The birthday of the museum successfully echoes a whole series of round dates. This summer, in June 2026, it was 150 years since the birth of the most famous neurosurgeon. The hospital, named Burdenko since 1956, recently celebrated its 180th year since its opening.
Burdenko combined the talent of an outstanding practitioner and a deep theorist. He operated during the Russian-Japanese campaign, and during the Great Patriotic War he became the chief surgeon of the Red Army. It is he who owns the primacy in the application of primary wound treatment and the imposition of sutures on the injured skull in the field. In addition, he managed to separate neurosurgery into a separate scientific branch.
For many generations of doctors, Nikolai Nilovych personifies selfless devotion to the profession, scientific audacity and the highest level of skill. His rich heritage still serves as a guide and inspires young doctors to new achievements.
