Petersburgers staged a “funeral” 115-year-old poplar at the Bank Bridge

On the embankment of the Griboyedov Canal in St. Petersburg, a spontaneous memorial appeared on the site of a sawed 115-year-old Berlin poplar. Unknown people left near the former tree red carnations, candles and a commemorative tablet with the years of his life - 1911-2026. This is reported by argumenti.ru.

A message was posted on the plaque that the tree can be destroyed in one day, but it is impossible to return it to 115 years.

Poplar grew near the Bank Bridge since the beginning of the last century and was considered one of the oldest trees in St. Petersburg. He remained the last representative of the historical alley of Berlin poplars, once stretching along the Griboyedov Canal. The tree even managed to leave a mark in the virtual world, appearing in the video game Call of Duty.

Recall that the famous poplar was cut down on October 19. Earlier, the Committee on improvement explained that the request to remove the tree appealed St. Petersburg State Economic University. The cause was found stem rot, hollows and pests. The university feared that the tree could fall on the historic fence, which is planned to be restored.
