The administration of Volgodonsk will announce a contractor for a comprehensive survey of the toxic waste landfill of the former chemical plant

The administration of Volgodonsk will announce a contractor for a comprehensive survey of the toxic waste landfill of the former chemical plant. The work is aimed at a detailed study of the territory located in the industrial zone of the enterprise, which ceased its activities in the 1990s.
For almost 40 years of operation of the chemical plant at the landfill near the village of the locks accumulated hundreds of thousands of tons of industrial waste 2-4 hazard classes, the total volume of which, according to the Volgodon Ecological and Historical Museum, amounted to 823.6 thousand tons. The landfill is not currently in operation.
The purpose of the forthcoming works is to prepare the territory for reclamation. Specialists will conduct a comprehensive study of soil, air, surface and groundwater. As part of the survey, the total amount of remaining waste, the area and thickness of contaminated soils, the depth of their contamination will be determined, as well as the possible spread of harmful substances outside the landfill.
The research will take place in several stages. Geodetic, geological, hydrometeorological and geophysical surveys are planned to be completed by December 15, 2026. Further, until December 15, 2027, an environmental survey will be conducted.
The issue of reclamation of the landfill has been on the agenda of the city authorities for several years. In 2023, the administration of Volgodonsk stressed the importance of a thorough assessment of accumulated environmental damage before developing a reclamation project. Applications for participation in the tender for the selection of a contractor are accepted until October 19.
