The strip for year-round flights and large aircraft will be updated at the airport of Khibiny

At the airport of Khibiny (Apatity) in the Murmansk region reconstruct runway and other facilities. The project received a positive conclusion from the Glavgosexpertiza of Russia.

The main change will affect the runway with a length of almost 2.5 kilometers. During its reconstruction, engineers had to take into account the features of the local soil: rocks lie close to the surface, which affects the strength of the base.

“The peculiarity of the location of the aerodrome of the city of Apatity is the close occurrence of rocky soil, which, on the one hand, increases the coefficient of the bed system “soil on the rock base”, on the other hand, the stresses in the pinched ground layer increase. Therefore, when designing the design of artificial coatings, additional calculations were required to determine the equivalent coefficient of the bed of the base and check the strength of the maximum pressure on the ground, the representative of the Glavgosexpertiza of Russia said.

In addition to the runway, the airport is reconstructing a taxiway along which aircraft move between the runway and other sections of the airfield. Also, treatment facilities for rain and melt water, a sewer pumping station, transformer substations and sections of road for patrol cars will be built.

The reconstruction will improve the reliability of the airport in different seasons. In the future, the air harbor plans to expand the route network and accept larger-capacity aircraft.

After the upgrade, the airport expects to receive more spacious aircraft and work more reliably throughout the year.
