Schoolgirl dies after drinking milkshake in cafe
In London, a 12-year-old girl named Mia died after drinking a milkshake cooked in a poorly washed blender

In London, a 12-year-old girl named Mia has died after drinking a milkshake cooked in a poorly washed blender. This is reported by the Independent. The schoolgirl ordered a milkshake in the cafe, after which she rapidly developed anaphylaxis. The girl later lost consciousness at her aunt's house. Despite treatment and resuscitation at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, she was not saved.
According to experts, the cause of Mia's death was a severe allergic reaction to hazelnuts. During the investigation, it turned out that the drink, which the schoolgirl drank before the death, got the remains of nuts from the previous order – a cocktail Kinder Bueno. CCTV footage showed the cafe employee did not wash the blender before making a drink for the girl. The tragedy occurred due to the violation of elementary rules of hygiene and equipment processing, which was supposed to exclude cross-contamination with allergens.
In January 2025, a cafe worker pleaded guilty to six charges. He was fined £18,000 and given 100 hours of community service. But, as the parents of the deceased girl note, punishing one employee does not solve the systemic problem. They said they hoped to push for changes to food allergen control rules to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Mia's story has once again drawn attention to the safety of people with food allergies in catering establishments. The girl’s parents are seeking tougher labeling, training and equipment controls to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
