Tatarstan prepares quarantine due to rabies in six districts

Six municipalities of the Republic of Tatarstan are preparing for the introduction of a quarantine lasting 60 days. The cause was identified cases of rabies among animals. The list of territories where the introduction of restrictions is expected includes Tukayevsky, Sarmanovsky, Mamadysh, Menzelinsky, Bugulma and Aktanishsky districts. All the necessary documents have already been sent to Kazan, and now it remains to wait for the decree of Rais of the republic.

An alarming signal was the incident in the village of Kalmash and the village of Novy. There, a sick cat bit a woman and a male guard who managed to catch the animal and hand it over to the veterinary service. Laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of the rabies virus. In response, veterinarians deployed emergency on-site vaccination of susceptible animals throughout the area to prevent the dangerous infection from spreading further.

According to the chief veterinary inspector of Tatarstan Gabdulkhak Motygullin, 29 foci of rabies have been identified in the republic since the beginning of the year. This is eight more than in the same period last year. The spread of the disease also increased: the virus was detected in 18 administrative districts, while a year earlier it was recorded in 14 districts. A particularly difficult situation has developed in the Aktanish and Menzelinsky districts - there are 3 outbreaks of the disease.

Rabies was confirmed in 12 cats, 8 dogs and 5 foxes.

Veterinarians believe that the increase in the number of cases is due to the fact that wild animals are increasingly appearing near people's homes. In particular, foxes cease to fear humans and come out of the forest even in the daytime. Because of this, pets are the first to be hit. They come into contact with infected wild animals, become infected themselves, and can then attack humans.

In order to prevent further spread of the infection, the republic is forced to shoot wild foxes. Since the beginning of the year, more than 6 thousand individuals have been eliminated in this way.
