Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) together with an international team of researchers have developed a technology based on artificial intelligence (AI), which allows much more accurate prediction of weather for up to six weeks. The results of the study are published in the journal Nature.
The new algorithm analyzes errors in existing meteorological models and automatically adjusts their predictions. The technology doubled the accuracy of predictions over a period of two to six weeks. The development also won first place in the international competition of meteorological models.
A particularly important achievement was the ability to better predict natural hazards, including severe frosts, floods and droughts. Previously, predictions for such a period were considered extremely unreliable, since atmospheric processes are too complex and subject to constant changes.
According to the developers, the new system will help power engineers, farmers and emergency services prepare in advance for weather threats. The technology does not require powerful supercomputers, is open source and can be used in conjunction with existing forecasting systems.
