Scientists have made an amazing discovery about dogs

Japanese scientists have found that dogs are able to distinguish between adults and children not only by appearance, but also by voice. Moreover, animals can match the speech heard with an image of a person of the appropriate age. This conclusion was reached by specialists of Osaka University, the results of the study were published in the scientific journal Animal Behaviour.

The study involved 69 domestic dogs. The researchers included recordings of the voices of unfamiliar adult women and girls, and then showed pictures of adults and children. Scientists have recorded how much time the animals looked at the images. It turned out that dogs, on average, held their eyes longer in photos when the age of the person depicted coincided with the age of the speaker.

Specialists found a particularly interesting pattern in pets that used to live in families with children. Such dogs were much more likely to pay attention to the coincidence of voice and appearance, while animals without such experience did not show such a pronounced reaction. According to the researchers, this suggests that dogs gradually remember the characteristic features of children's faces and voices through everyday communication.

Previously, scientists have already established that dogs are able to match human voices with faces, recognize emotions and distinguish the sex of people. A new study shows for the first time that a similar mechanism can extend to age. The authors hope that the discovery will help to better understand the behavior of pets, including their reaction to the unpredictable actions of young children, and make the interaction of animals with children safer.
