We are used to fearing Terminator-style scenarios where artificial intelligence inevitably leads human civilization to ruin. However, Dr Kevin Hunt from Nottingham Trent University suggests looking at the issue from a different angle.

In his article for The Conversation, the expert suggests considering AI not as an absolute enemy, but as a kind of transformative force that is gradually integrated into our lives, replacing outdated social and economic structures. For clarity, the scientist cites an example from the sci-fi thriller Annihilation: there an alien substance not only destroys the ecosystem, but mutates and rebuilds it, creating something new. According to Hunt, the influence of algorithms develops in a similar scenario.

Although futurists often paint grim pictures – from the total extinction of humans to their replacement with digital avatars – the researcher is sure that this outcome is not fatal or inevitable. On the contrary, superintelligent systems are able to take on the solution of problems that are impossible for a person. Automation of dangerous and routine professions, revolution in agriculture and global optimization of production can lead to unprecedented growth of prosperity and a new round of development of civilization.

The main conclusion of the researcher is that we should not dwell solely on apocalyptic predictions. Instead, we need to focus on the ethical and environmental dimensions of technology. Artificial intelligence should work for the benefit of the whole society, solving real problems, and not serve as a tool for enriching a narrow circle of technological giants.
