Fading memories: Belgorod residents explained how memory problems begin
This was told by neurologist Tatiana Podporinova and geriatrician Eugene Matveychenko

Memory problems begin unnoticed. From a forgotten list of products, the actor's last name or a loved one's birthday. But is this an integral part of aging that everyone will have to face? Or are there ways to avoid it?
That's where it all starts
With age, the brain changes. But, as the geriatrician noted, memory should not be "lost." If it affects the quality of life, this is a reason to consult a doctor.
Memory problems are not just related to dementia. Yes, its most common form, Alzheimer's, accounts for about two-thirds of all cases. But sometimes the cause is severe anemia, hypothyroidism, the consequences of stroke, diabetes, vitamin deficiency. Sometimes it is enough to cure the underlying disease to cope with lapses in memory.
And sometimes memory problems are simply associated with chronic stress, anxiety, or overwork. Then you need to normalize sleep and reduce the level of experiences.
When to pay attention
Most often, dementia begins with “small forgetfulness.” A person does not remember what happened a few days ago, tells the same story, begins to experience difficulties with the performance of usual work. Behavior is gradually changing. He becomes suspicious, anxious or, conversely, indifferent.
Symptoms often appear after retirement. While working, his brain solved dozens of tasks every day. And after lifestyle changes, cognitive load decreased.
Loneliness and loss of habitual social role can play a role. Depression is considered one of the risk factors.
How do you preserve memory?
It can be taken care of from a very young age. Investments in brain health are reading, learning foreign languages, music, chess, needlework, new routes, travel and communication.
