The progress of the reconstruction of the Minsk treatment plant during a visiting meeting at the facility was told to journalists by the Deputy Director of the UE “Minskvodokanal” Kirill Antonov, BelTA reports.

As Kirill Antonov noted, the Minsk treatment plant includes the construction of two main stages of cleaning - mechanical and biological. Work on mechanical cleaning facilities is almost completed. They plan to be put into operation before the end of the year. “Biologic treatment facilities are currently under active operation. We expect the first biological treatment line to be launched by the end of the year. Work is also under way on wastewater fermentation facilities. We plan to launch them in 2027. The final stage will be the construction of a complex for drying and burning sediment. It is expected that this stage will be completed in 2028, he said.
According to the deputy director, the complex of structures is divided into five stages of construction. The first stage is the reconstruction of mechanical treatment facilities, the second is the reconstruction of biological treatment facilities and the construction of a wastewater disinfection complex. The third stage includes the reconstruction of structures for the preparation of sediment, sealing of active sludge and dehydration of the sediment mixture. The fourth is the construction of a fermentation complex, the fifth is the construction of a complex for its drying and burning. “It is expected that the entire complex of construction and installation works will be completed in 2028,” Kirill Antonov said.
He noted that the reconstruction is carried out on existing facilities. “This is one of the factors that seriously complicates the execution of the work, especially in terms of timing. Builders work in the same area with the service of operation. The front of works for construction and installation teams is provided as technological readiness. Roughly speaking, the entire complex of structures is divided into four captures. The completion of work on each of them opens access to the next one, which to some extent affects the pace of reconstruction of the station, the speaker explained.
According to Kirill Antonov, the reconstruction began to prepare long before the start of work. So, the pre-project documentation was prepared in 2016. The treatment facilities were built in Minsk in 1963. At that time it was one of the most modern structures not only in the USSR, but also in Western Europe. In many European capitals there were no sewage treatment plants. The requirements for the quality of wastewater treatment and the standards for their discharge into the river have changed. For Minsk, the issue of recycling sludge formed in the process of wastewater treatment is also relevant. In addition, sewage treatment plants can be a source of unpleasant odors. This is due to the large area of outdoor pools and features of the technological process. Therefore, the collection and removal of unpleasant odors is one of the key tasks of the reconstruction of wastewater treatment plants, the deputy director shared.
According to him, during the preparation of the project, we thoroughly studied the best world experience. “We can say that the plant has modern cleaning solutions. Among them are perforated grilles with a view of 3-6 millimeters. In addition, at some stages, additional cleaning of internal flows entering the head structures is provided. These are treatment plants inside the treatment plants, Kirill Antonov added.
Reconstruction is carried out by the classical method for the city - parallel design. As the director of UE "Belkommunproekt" Denis Drapey noted, first of all, a project of mechanical cleaning facilities was developed: "To date, the design of structures for working with sludge and biological wastewater treatment has been completed. Work on these structures and buildings is already underway. The fifth stage is the construction of a combustion plant. He's almost ready. It remains only to adapt it to the selected equipment.
According to Denis Drapey, the burning plant will become a completely new facility for the Republic of Belarus. “If other facilities are already used in our country to varying degrees, the combustion plant will be the first and possibly the only one in Belarus. Perhaps one of the most difficult issues is the storage of wastewater sludge. The burning plant will help solve this problem. As a result, we will get ash that can be used, for example, for pouring existing landfills and isolating their layers, without harming the environment, he listed the advantages.
During the reconstruction of the Minsk treatment plant, the use of renewable energy sources is also envisaged. “These are methane tanks, biogas plants and the subsequent generation of electricity from the resulting biogas. About two-thirds of the energy needs of the Minsk treatment plant will be provided by renewable sources, Denis Drapey said.
He added that the main principle in the development of the project was environmental orientation. The goal is to reduce the impact on the environment and create favorable conditions for the population.
