The strengthening of the natural phenomenon of El Niño will not have a significant impact on the weather in the Murmansk region, told RIA Novosti the head of the Murmansk hydrometeorological center Elena Siekkinen.
The expert noted that El Niño is characteristic primarily for tropical areas. The Arctic is far from this zone, but climatic processes in different parts of the world can indirectly affect each other. The climate in the Arctic is warming much faster than in the central part of Russia.
El Niño is a natural climatic phenomenon in which surface waters in the tropical Pacific Ocean become abnormally warm. It can cause heavy rains and floods in some regions and droughts in others.
According to the World Meteorological Organization, the current El Niño could be the strongest since 1950.
Earlier, “MK in Murmansk” reported that in the Murmansk region on October 21 will warm up to +8 degrees.
