The Rzhev Old Believer Choir performed in the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin of the Antoniev Monastery. The concert was timed to the 25th anniversary of the revival of the Church of St. John the Theologian on Vitka and demonstrated the traditions of ancient Russian liturgical singing preserved in the Old Believer environment, the press service of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve reported.
The program featured stimuli in the traditions of the iconic, demescent and travel chants, as well as spiritual poems. The famous chant is characterized by a measured and uniform rhythm, the demescent is distinguished by a solemn presentation, and the track – by a long, calm sound.
The head of the choir Vasily Gladyshev noted that for the restoration of chants, the team uses handwritten sources from Old Believers churches, digitized archival materials and historical audio recordings. Old Russian singing, according to him, is a significant part of the national cultural heritage, which has survived to the present due to the continuity of the Old Believer tradition.
The performance in the temple of the XII century emphasized the connection of times: the acoustics and atmosphere of the ancient cathedral allowed to reveal the features of ancient chants and bring them to the listener in the most authentic form.
