DR Congo fails to track $700 million earmarked to fight Ebola
A review of international assistance to the Democratic Republic of the Congo against Ebola failed to establish the use of most of the funds allocated

An audit of international assistance to the Democratic Republic of the Congo against Ebola did not establish the use of most of the funds allocated. Of the approximately 962 million dollars donated by donors to specialized organizations, the inspectors received information about only 228 million dollars. This is reported by Africanews with reference to the head of the African Center for Disease Control and Prevention Jean Kaseyu.
According to the audit, of the $228 million for which information was provided, about $127 million has already been spent. The remaining funds are at the disposal of recipients.
At a press conference in Kinshasa, Kaseya said less than 30 percent of the organizations involved in the fight against the epidemic were reporting. The African Center, in collaboration with DR Congo’s health authorities, intends to find out how the money was distributed and what activities were carried out with the allocated funds.
At the same time, Kaseya stressed that the lack of financial reporting in itself does not indicate theft. According to him, the problem identified is related to the opacity of international aid management.
Organizations that refuse to disclose expenditures could face being stripped of their accreditation in the DR Congo. In addition, the head of the African Center warned about the possibility of including such recipients in the pan-African blacklist. According to him, some organizations have already begun to provide the necessary data.
DR Congo's government has tightened controls on international funding. Health Minister Samuel Roger Camba also warned of sanctions against organizations that could not confirm the use of the funds received.
The current Ebola outbreak in the country was reported in May 2026. The number of confirmed cases exceeded 9 thousand, more than 4.3 thousand people died. According to the source, this outbreak was the largest in the history of the DR Congo in terms of the number of sick and dead.
