Since this year, a new measure to support pregnant women has been launched in the republic. According to the national project “Family”, expectant mothers with medium and high risk of chromosomal abnormalities will be able to undergo non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) for free.
This test is available to those women whose risks were identified by the results of screening of the first trimester. The procedure is carried out on the basis of the Perinatal Center named after O. Shungaeva. Funding is provided by the program of state guarantees of free medical care.
NIPT is a modern blood test of the future mother. It allows you to study extracellular DNA of the fetus and assess the likelihood of such common pathologies as Down, Edwards and Patau syndromes, as well as abnormalities of sex chromosomes. The main advantage of the method is that it does not require invasive intervention – it is enough to take blood from a woman.
Experts emphasize that NIPT is a screening study and does not make a definitive diagnosis. If the test shows a high risk, the doctor may refer the patient for additional examinations.
