The environmental initiative “Totem White Saiga”, aimed at preserving the population of Red Book Antelope, received financial support from the Presidential Nature Foundation. The grant in the amount of 667 thousand rubles will allow activists of the Ecological squad named after Uldis Knakis together with employees of the state biosphere reserve "Black Lands" to launch work in three regions at once: in Kalmykia, Astrakhan region and Nogai district of Dagestan.
The project is not limited to scientific work. Environmental landings and public patrols are planned, as well as an extensive educational program for schoolchildren and students. The culmination will be the release of the documentary film “Pearl of the Steppe”, dedicated to the life and preservation of the saiga.
Support for this initiative became known on the eve of the Caspian Ecological Summit, held on October 9 in Avaza. In total, the fund presented three projects from the Russian Caspian Sea, which received grants totaling more than 15 million rubles. The summit was attended by the leaders of Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Iran.
