In the Kostroma region, newborns were called rare names Efim and Efrosinya

In October 2026, a surge of interest in ancient names was recorded in the Kostroma region. According to the regional registry office, the boy was named Efim, and the girl – Ephrosyne. Both names have Greek roots: the first translates as “pious,” and the second as “joy.”.

Statistics of the Ministry confirm that these names are a rarity in the region. From 1926 to 2018, only 161 boys were named Efim. The peak of popularity came in 1926 (10 newborns), and nowadays it is called a maximum of one or two children a year.

The name Efrosinha is even rarer. Over the past hundred years, only 42 girls with this name were born in the region. Since the beginning of 2000, only four children have received this name.
