In December, London police plan to install real-time facial recognition cameras on Oxford Street, one of the main shopping streets of the British capital. The new technology will scan the faces of visitors, including shoppers who come for Christmas presents. P.I.A. reports.
About 500,000 people pass through Oxford Street every day. From October 26, a significant part of the street will be closed to traffic and will be pedestrianized.
Oxford Street will be one of the first streets in the UK to feature stationary cameras of this type. Previously, facial recognition systems were used on special police cars.
In the future, Scotland Yard intends to expand the application of the technology to other streets of the West End and Soho districts.
Oxford Street is located in the West End area, known for its shops, restaurants, hotels and theaters. Plans to turn the street into a pedestrian street were first presented in September 2024.
