Mass arrests begin in Milan

The Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reports that about 50 people were taken to Milan police stations after riots broke out during a protest against the rising cost of living.

The march, organized by Italia in Piazza, was attended by about 5,000 people. Protesters expressed dissatisfaction with the rise in fuel prices, low wages, as well as systemic problems in the health sector and the poor state of public educational institutions.

A peaceful procession in the center of the Italian city turned into mass clashes. The demonstrators began to throw stones, glass bottles, firecrackers and improvised explosive devices. Police in special equipment repeatedly used physical force, and later were forced to use tear gas and water cannons to disperse the aggressive crowd.

According to the newspaper, as a result of street riots suffered several people, among whom were law enforcement officers.

In turn, the local portal MilanoToday estimates the number of injured people by dozens.

In addition, the attackers damaged public transport stops, windows of historical buildings and police cars.

Clashes continued in Duomo Square near the main city cathedral, as well as in the area of adjacent Mercanti Square. Some activists erected barricades from dumpsters and roadblocks, continuing to throw stones and other objects at police.

Against the background of the aggravation of the situation, the authorities were forced to restrict access to the central metro station “Duomo”, and tourists in a hurry left this territory.
