In Naryan-Mar, the action “Peace to the touch” was held, timed to coincide with the International White Cane Day.
The Nenets local organization of the All-Russian Society of the Blind (VOS) invited the participants of the action - activists of the regional branch of the Movement of the First - to learn how people with visual disabilities live.
With blindfolds on his eyes, with a white cane in his hand, trusting the attendants, the guys walked from the intersection at the district administration on Vyucheisky Street. Representatives of the VOS walked alongside in the role of "experts" - telling how to hold a cane, how to "listen" to the space, how to respond to curbs and obstacles. The event continued in the VOS office with an interactive quest.
The participants of the action did not play “blind”, but got an experience that helped to realize that a blind person lives in the same world, but reads it with other tools. The cane is not a symbol of weakness, but a tool that helps to remain independent. Young people often do not know how to behave with a blind person. Today, the guys from the First Movement have this understanding, said Marina Govsha, chairman of the Nenets local organization VOS.
The Governor of NAO Irina Gekht thanked the organizers of the action – mentors who helped the children pass the route and share their experience.
- Of course, a bandage for a few hours does not allow you to know what it is like to live without sight. But a joint business gives you the opportunity to meet, ask questions and overcome the awkwardness that sometimes prevents you from starting a conversation. Thank you to everyone who held “Peace to the touch”, – said the head of the region.
The Nenets organization has been operating since 1940 and today unites 100 people. Its main activity is the protection of the rights and interests of blind and visually impaired people, social and cultural rehabilitation and promotion of equal opportunities.
