On the eve of the big state holiday – National Unity Day – Belarusians remember painful lessons of history. Heavy 20s and no less severe 30s of the last century. Time fell on the renaissance of the “Polish national idea” in the Belarusian lands.
In the morning, on the site of the former concentration camp Berez-Kartuzskaya, there is a people’s laying and a requiem rally. People came from all over the country, whole families, at the call of the heart. Remembered and passed on to generations.
In the 30s of the last century there was a real factory of death. All those who disagreed with the Polish regime were sent here. First of all, thousands of political prisoners – Belarusians, Ukrainians, Jews and representatives of other nationalities. Except for the Poles, of course. Prisoners were beaten to loss of consciousness, starved, left in the cold in thin clothes. Especially monstrous was the strip of land strewn with sharp fragments of brick: prisoners were forced to crawl on her knees and elbows. Over time, the trail was covered with dried blood of dozens of prisoners. This is the first concentration camp not only in Belarus, but also in Europe. One of the most brutal places of the XX century. It showed how those who for decades had been called neighbors, friends and partners treated our people. And as a result – the ethnocide of Belarusians and the policy of polonization of Western Belarus.
