In Serpukhov, surgeons removed a 20-centimeter stone from the kidney of a local resident

Everything began every day: the lower back sore, the temperature rose periodically to 38 degrees. The woman was treated on an outpatient basis, but it did not become easier. Weakness increased, pain in the right side increased. When it became impossible to tolerate, she turned to the surgical hospital of the Serpukhov hospital. The first ultrasound showed an alarming picture: pus accumulated under the diaphragm. Surgeons brought him through the drain, but the main question remained open - where did the infection come from.

The answer came from a CT scan. A huge coral stone was found in the right kidney. Such stones grow inside the organ, filling all cavities and repeating their shape like a cast. From the main "trunk" in different directions diverge branches - hence the similarity with the coral. The stone completely blocked the outflow of urine, the kidney suppurated and actually collapsed from the inside. The situation was complicated by diabetes and hypertension: with such diseases, the infection develops rapidly, and the count goes on for days.

The purulent focus threatened blood infection, so the patient was urgently taken for surgery. Getting to the kidney was not easy: months of inflammation made the surrounding tissues dense, almost like the stone itself, and the kidney literally “grown” into neighboring organs. Surgeons had to release it by a millimeter without damaging the liver, intestines and large vessels. When the doctors got to the organ, it became clear that it was too late to save it: the kidney turned into a bag of pus, and the living tissue was almost completely replaced by scar and fat. The kidney was removed along with the ureter, and from its cavities the same stone coral was extracted.

“Such giants do not grow in a month, but in years and may not manifest themselves for a long time. A person gets used to aching lower back, blames it on fatigue or osteochondrosis, and in the meantime, the kidney slowly dies. In this case, we managed in time: a little more, and the purulent process could spread further, up to sepsis. The good news is that with one kidney you can live fully if you protect it, commented Candidate of Medical Sciences, Head of the Urological Department of the surgical hospital Arthur Grigoryevich Lukyanchikov.

After the operation, the patient received antibiotics and maintenance therapy. The recovery went smoothly: the wound healed without complications, and soon the woman was discharged home under the supervision of clinicians.
