The fire hazard period in the forests of the region lasted 204 days (from March 25). According to the regional Ministry of Forestry, during this time, 8 forest fires with a total area of 9.41 hectares were recorded, and each of them was eliminated on the day of detection. 88 specialists and about 30 units of equipment were involved in extinguishing.
During the season, the Forest Fire Service carried out large-scale prevention: arrangement and cleaning of mineralized strips, entrances to water sources, installation of barriers and information signs. In parallel, reforestation works were carried out - planting of seedlings and agricultural care.
Governor Vasily Anokhin stressed that due to operational work and monitoring in the region, large fires were prevented (forests occupy 42% of the region’s territory – more than 2 million hectares), and thanks to the national project “Environmental Well-being”, Smolensk region is consistently included in the TOP-10 regions of Russia in terms of forest management efficiency.
