In Prague, several dozen protesters tried to force their way into the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Czech parliament. The police prevented them from getting inside. No one was detained, police spokeswoman Eva Kropachova said, according to the portal Novinky.
The incident occurred on the night of September 24 amid a rally against a planned change in the funding system of public law Czech television and radio. According to the representative of the police, after the intervention of employees of the special unit, the situation was calmed down.
Earlier in the evening, several hundred activists gathered in front of the parliament building on Malostra Square. Some of the participants, according to Czech media, remained in place after the night incident. In the near future, deputies should consider the relevant changes.
The ruling coalition of the Czech Republic proposed to abandon the current system of collecting mandatory payments from owners of television sets and radios and review the mechanism of financing public broadcasters.
The bill provides for the transition from direct contributions of citizens to the allocation of funds from the state budget. Protesters fear that such a scheme would restrict public television and radio and jeopardize their independence from the authorities.
